Activity 1: Conversation Classes

The primary objective of these classes is to assist Foundation Programme students to improve speaking and communication skills which are tested and valued at 25% of the Final Examination Mark. The classes are conducted in two levels: Intermediate and Advanced. A maximum of 150 students per level are allowed to enroll. Enrolment is on a first-come-first-served basis.



Activity 2: Drama Club


Objectives:

Develop skill in oral language and all expressive mechanisms (voice and bodily expression).

To realize the simultaneous opportunities for leadership and group participation (group level cooperation).


ELC plans to organize, practice and stage two plays for the college community in the month of June. One play will be set apart exclusively for the girls and the other for the boys. There will be provision for only 2 groups with a maximum of 12 students per group. Participation will be open for all the enrolled students in the class but the final selection for stage production will be on the basis of merit and performance (to be evaluated by the teacher facilitator).



Activity 3: Debate Club


Objectives:

To understand and communicate various forms of argument effectively in a variety of contexts.

To develop the ability to analyze controversies, select and evaluate evidence, construct and refute arguments.


The debate club enrollment will be restricted to Level 3 and Level 4 students only and a maximum of 40 students will be selected to be accommodated in two groups. ELC will organize one (open to all departments) competition to celebrate the fruitful completion of the training programme in June and attractive prizes will be given to the winners.



Activity 4: Research Club for Teachers


Objectives:

To assist teachers in their professional development and in turn enhance the standard of English among students.


All the members of the ELC teaching faculty will be members of the club. The main activities of the club will include weekly presentations/workshops given by one or two teacher volunteers or visiting resource persons; collection/sharing of professional research papers/publications; generation of pedagogical materials; weekly group discussions/chatting on topics of academic relevance; etc.



Activity 5: Remedial Classes


Objectives:

To help the academically disadvantaged students to catch up with the rest of the class.

To motivate the slow learning groups/students in the Foundation Programme.


All the students in all levels will get the benefit of these classes. Each group will be limited to a maximum of 20 students. Attendance in these classes will be made compulsory for the students who are enrolled by the group tutors. Remedial classes are structured around the concept of mentoring.



Activity 6: Newspaper Reading Club


Objectives:

To cultivate the habit of reading English newspapers among the ELC students.

To generate social awareness and enhance general knowledge.

To help students correlate general reading with classroom activities.


Enrolment in these classes will be on the first-come-first-served basis. Each Foundation Level will have one Newspaper Reading Club Group with a maximum of 20 students (per group). The club will conduct monthly quizzes on GK and a semester-end quiz open to students from all departments.



Activity 7: Writers' Club


Objectives:

The aim of the Club is for the students to develop their creative writing abilities and an appreciation for literature.


Enrolment in these classes will be on the basis of interest and talent exhibited by the students. Poetry/short story reading; creative writing; group discussion and presentations; etc. will be the chief activities of the club.



Activity 8: Student Magazine


Objectives:

To encourage students to produce original write-ups of good quality and to train them with the art of desktop publishing and editing.


This is an open-to-all activity which demands collaborative work done under the guidance and supervision of tutors. The students themselves will be nominated as the editors, proof readers, designers and publishers. This is the only activity that is yet to be fully activated as the creative output for this comes only after the completion of the other activities.



Activity 9: English for Specific Purposes


Objectives:

To familiarize the students with the basic vocabulary and concepts related to their future specializations.

To motivate, improve and extend the language skills of students through a series of
exercises that combine English language tasks with technical knowledge/concepts (related to Engineering/IT/Business Studies/Science).


The duration of this module is one contact hour per week (on Saturdays for Level 3 and on Mondays for Level 4 students). It is mandatory for the students and staff to be involved in this activity. The Intermediate and Advanced level students are grouped according to their future specializations (IT/Engineering/Business Studies & General Science). Level 4 currently consists of 6 Engineering groups, 3 IT groups, 2 Science groups and 2 Business Studies groups. Level 3 has 6 Engineering groups, 2 IT groups, 2 Science groups and 3 Business Studies groups. The worksheets and units are locally compiled and designed and are accommodated in the general ELC time-table (sample units are attached in another file).
