Student Council

The Nizwa College of Technology Student Council is a representative body composed chiefly of students chosen by their peers through a council election. Their main function is to organize social and extra-cullicular activities and act as representatives of students to the college.

The General Assembly of the Student Council

  1. The Student Council General assembly is comprised of all students registered during the year of service. The Assistant Dean for Student Affairs shall call a council meeting during the first month of the commencement of the academic year.
  2. Elections/appointments of the Student Council shall take place during the meeting of the General Assembly.
  3. The Student Council Administrative Board is comprised of: the President, First Vice President (male student), Second Vice President (female students) and Secretary.
  4. A list of candidates running for the position of president or membership of the Student Council shall be announced two weeks prior to the commencement of voting.
  5. The positions mentioned in article (3) above should be divided equally (fifty-fifty) between males and females.
  6. All candidates shall fill out a form prepared for this purpose.
  7. Any interested party can challenge the contestant’s candidature during the announcement period as per the following conditions: a.) Evidence in support of the challenge shall be submitted to the Office of the Assistant Dean For Student Affairs. b.) A form shall be filled in for this purpose. c.) A committee shall examine the challenge within 48 hours after the filing of the challenge. d.) The committee shall issue a final decision which may not be appealed.
  8. The Assistant Dean For Student Affairs shall form an Election Supervisory Committee to monitor the elections and to set the date and ballot of election.
  9. Elections can be performed electronically provided that all necessary procedures and legislations are completed.
  10. The Assistant Dean For Student Affairs shall forward the poll results to the College Dean.
  11. Elected members will serve one academic year in their positions.
  12. The College Dean shall issue a decision endorsing the poll results.

Election Supervisory Committee

  1. The Assistant Dean for Student affairs shall issue a decision to establish a supervisory committee to monitor the council elections.
  2. The decision shall define the duties and procedures that should be followed to make the elections succeed.
  3. Once the elections are over, the authority of the committee expires.

The Procedure of the Student Council

  1. The Student Council shall represent both male and female students and shall act as a vehicle for the expression of their opinions and ideas through appropriate social means and as per the Bylaws of the Colleges of Technology.
  2. The Student Council shall meet twice every semester provided that all coordination and announcements with the Office of the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs should take place prior to the meeting.
  3. 10 members are needed for a quorum to make a meeting official.
  4. The council shall issue its decisions with the majority vote. If the event of an equal votes, the president’s side shall win.
  5.  Grounds for dismissal for any member of the Student Council include: a.) death b.) Graduation, postponement of study, withdrawal from the college or the council. c.) a disciplinary decision issued against a member from the college or from outside the college.
  6. The council shall be charged with addressing issues, concerns and recommendations that      arise among students in the Student Affairs Council meetings.
  7. The  President may be required to attend some College meetings to discuss issues pertinent to the  students’ interests.

Responsibilities and Duties of the Student Council

  1. Shall discuss all problems facing the students during their study in the college and offer suggestions on how to address them.
  2. Shall offer suggestions regarding the upgrading of the curriculum and the student activities.
  3. Shall identify the means that can help promote the services offered to students by the college.
  4. Shall participate in all college planning that concerns the students.
  5. Shall identify programs that foster /enhance students’ talents and develop their creative and practical abilities.
  6. Shall examine all issues forwarded to the Council by the College Dean or the Student Affairs Council.
