It was a time to rejoice by the IT Department upon hearing the news that the IT students Horiya Al Busaidi, Aisha Al Hinai and Ali Al Harrasi who participated in the OCPC competition coached by Mr. Asad Mustafa, IT lecturer secured 32nd position worldwide and 6th position in The Sultanate of Oman. On 20th January 2021, a practice session was conducted to verify that all the setup was made according to the rules specified by the Organizers. A set of questions were posed to the students and they had to solve them and upload the solutions in the application shared by the organizers. This went on for 5 hours. The final competition was held on the next day 21st January 2021 from 12 noon to 5 pm. During the competition, a score board was made visible to all the staff in the common area outside the lab where students were participating. Two cameras were capturing the front and rear view of the competition. The IT students called themselves as NCTBugHunters and it was a great pleasure to see them on the 3rd position in the first 3 minutes when the students solved the first program so early. Later the scores of other teams started coming up. Our team was in the top 5 for quite some time as the students were quickly solving the problems. The students used C++ tool to crack the problems. In an interview with Dr. Duhai Alshukaili, the head of IT department, he highlighted the importance of these competitions as they provide the students to put their skills to test. He also stressed on the need to widen student’s participation in such competitions, given that, programming is one of the key 21st century skills. At the end of the day the results were announced. Team NCTBugHunters secured 6th position at Oman level while 32nd position in the overall score. A lot of cheering boosted the environment as this was a great achievement in all the past years.
