The Marketing Section of the Business Studies Department (BSD), UTAS- Nizwa organized a webinar entitled “Materialism versus Minimalism- Marketers’ Woes. This was conducted through MS Teams last March 31, 2021. Around 65 participants attended the webinar.
In this age of consumerism, marketers and marketing educators need to be updated not only about the latest marketing trends but also of significant environmental issues and ramifications of marketing activities. This was the main objective of the webinar.
The attendees and the guest speaker was welcome by Dr. Mohammed al Qutaiti, one of the lecturers from the Marketing Section- BSD. This was followed by the opening remarks of the BSD-HOD Ms. Nahid al Shukaili, who emphasized the need for knowledge sharing through collaborative arrangements with external sectors. The Head of the Marketing Section, Ms. Turkiya Al Busaidi introduced the guest speaker, Dr. Saju Eapen Thomas, the Department Chair for Marketing at the City University College, Ajman, UAE.
In this webinar, the guest speaker engaged the attendees to a debate about the pros and cons and the dilemma caused by excessive consumerism. Citing several authors, the honorable guest emphasized that long term stability of economies relies greatly on responsible and controlled consumption while balancing the demands of consumerism.
After his talk, Dr. Saju acknowledged the comments of the participants answered their questions. A vote of thanks was extended by Ms. Ibtisam Al Hadrami, one of the outstanding BTECH students of the BSD who is taking her specialization in Marketing.
