The academic year 2021-2022 started off with a series of webinars and hands-on workshops in ELC. There were 6 webinars and 4 workshops starting from 12th – 16th September 2021. There were two sessions every day from 9.00 – 10.00 a.m. and 11.00 – 12.00 noon. Thanks to the ELC Management for the encouragement and full support.
On the 12th of September, in the first session, Mr. Michael Kamalesh presented Developing Speaking Skills for Beginners. The webinar dealt with how ELT experts use various techniques, activities, methods and sources to enrich students’ speaking skills. The second session of the day was a hands-on session by Mr. Govindaraj Ramesh on the tool H5P. This workshop has thrown in light to make interactive lessons that can be used effectively for flipped classroom approach.
On the second day of the training week, Dr. Fatemah Ranjbaran presented the topic, How to Create Online Quizzes. In this session, the presenter highlighted the value of formative assessment, as a process in online learning environments and some testing tools. The second session was a workshop by Ms. Beena Kulangara & Dr. Shyni Reji on MS Teams. The idea of this hands-on session was to refresh the features and clarify doubts.
Student Engagement in Online Learning was the webinar on the 14th of September. It was effectively presented by Dr. Lekha Nair & Ms. Suma Santhosh. The presentation clearly explained the meaning of engagement, the challenges in online teaching and the different ways of engaging students in online classes. The hands-on session done on the same day at 11.00 a.m. was Interactive Speaking Tools by Dr. Aravindan Balakrishnan. The presentation analyzed the ways interactive technologies influence motivation and encourage the students to speak fluently.
Another interesting webinar was Collaborative Teaching & Learning in Online Classes by Mr. Ishaq Al Naabi. This presentation introduced collaborative learning model and community of inquiry model for teachers and strategies for designing collaborative learning environments. After this session, Ms. Beena Kulangara conducted a workshop on MS Excel. The resource person explained clearly the features necessary for the staff and the hand-on session gave a great chance to refresh and explore some features.
On the 16th of September, there were two webinars. The first one was Effective IELTS Teaching by Mr. Hadi Sobhani Far. The presenter mentioned the challenges and presented a possibly effective way to teach reading and listening skills. The second webinar on the last day was ELT Teaching Tools & Apps by Dr. Ouarda Khouni. This webinar introduced some English learning tools and apps that can be useful for both teachers and students.
The training sessions covered useful topics for sustainability, new teaching methodology and also helped to refresh and replenish ideas for ELT online and offline. SDU of ELC takes this opportunity to thank all the presenters and moderators and Mr. Edward for his technical support.
