The staff development unit of Engineering department in association with the Human resource department conducted a training program titled “Student centric teaching learning process and effective assessment methods as per outcome-based education" on 18th October 2022, for all the academic staffs of UTAS Nizwa. The SDU committee extends sincere appreciations and gratitude to the Resource Person, Dr.Ramesh Shankaranarayana, Lecturer/M&I section/EngineeringDepartment/UTAS-Nizwa for agreeing to do a training session on this very relevant topic and sharing his knowledge and observations.

The session started with a welcome address by Ms. Turkiya Al Busaidi, the chairperson of SDU /UTAS-Nizwa, who stressed the importance of conducting the SDU activities for the academic staffs and the benefits harnessed out of it. The Engineering SDU committee member Mr. Taufeeq Ahmed had presented a short introduction about the speaker and his expertise to the audience.

In this training session, the speaker stressed the relevance and significance of Outcome-based education or outcomes-based education (OBE) which is an educational theory that bases each part of an educational system around goals (outcomes). He also pointed out that there is no single specified style of teaching or assessment in OBE; instead, classes, opportunities, and assessments should all help students achieve the specified outcomes. The role of the faculty adapts into instructor, trainer, facilitator, and/or mentor based on the outcomes targeted. The training session mainly focused on the applicability of OBE when developing curricula and outcomes, on developing skills like, Life skills, Basic skills, Professional and vocational skills; Intellectual skills, and Interpersonal and personal skills. The training session was very informative and covered almost all aspects of Outcomes based Education and how we can implement it in our present academic system.

In the end of the session, Dr. Bensujin, HOD of Engineering Department gave his vote of thanks message and thanked the speaker for his very informative session.
